The Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia which is often called "Grand Dame of Broad Street" is a historical landmark which represents the sophistication and glamor of the City gilded days since 1904. For many years, it was the center of political, cultural, business and social life. This was the epicenter were the most rich and powerful from around the World would dine, meet, have weddings, charity balls and hold the most coveted events.

15 U.S. Presidents, starting from Theodore Roosevelt and ending with Ronald Reagan have been guests of the hotel, including JFK who stayed here one month prior to his assassination in Dallas.

Date of stay: January, 2021

Room Type: Bellevue Suite

Now prices start at approximately $150 per night for a standard King Room up to approximately $450 per night for a Bellevue Suite (low season).

PROS
  • A blend of old-world architecture with modern art.

  • Beautiful unique design, furniture of natural materials like wood, marble.

  • Our Suite was huge, approximately 1000 sq.ft. It had a separate living room with dining area, master bedroom, bathroom and two walk-in closets.

  • Luxury high quality bathrobes and slippers.

  • The bed and mattress were really good. High quality linens

  • Convenient breakfast in-room delivery. The food from XIX restaurant was absolutely delicious.

  • Amazing city view from top 17th floor.

  • Small fridge, basic coffee-maker (complimentary Starbucks coffee and tea)

  • Luxurious Bath amenities

  • WI-FI is available at all areas and is free of charge.

  • The stuff was very nice. Even though they did mess up a little bit with our reservation and room at check-in, they’ve added bonus points to our account to make-up for it.

CONS
  • The main central entrance to the hotel is now a shared hotel/office entrance which locks after 6pm. As we arrived at 8pm, we found it difficult to find another entrance on a side of the building as otherwise it looks like the hotel is closed.

  • Limited food options. Unfortunately, a beautifully renovated XIX restaurant and lounge were temporarily closed serving only breakfast for guests for in-room dining.

  • No housekeeping (temporary restriction)

  • Unfortunately, their state-of-the-art huge gym (which occupies the whole separate building attached to the hotel!) was temporary closed.

  • Paid valet parking $53 / per night.

TIPS:

  • Bellevue Hotel is often referred to as a haunted hotel since July 1976, when it hosted a statewide convention of the American Legion. Soon after, a pneumonia-like disease killed 29 people and sickened 182 more who had been in the hotel. For better ghost-watching reviews suggest you should stay at 14th floor.

  • Pls ask for the main S Broad Street view room at check-in, top floors, some rooms may be dark.

  • Bellevue Hotel is now part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt (Category 4) and is part of their rewards program. The nights here count towards your elite status with Hyatt.

Overall experience: It was Great! The hotel itself is a historical masterpiece. Gorgeously decorated, meticulously restored by the later owners of the hotel to its original beauty, this historical hotel is a true gem find. Its Grand Ball Rooms still welcome major city events, corporate events, weddings and Charity balls. We really enjoyed reading about its rich history and imagined all the Royal families, politicians and Société who stayed here over the past century.

In terms of location – it can’t get any better. It’s in the epicenter of all major attractions, City Hall, Old market etc. We literally walked most of the time and enjoyed the old city.

We just wish the cleanliness and maintenance were improved.

It is perfect for a business traveler and tourists exploring old streets of Philly.

We stayed here in January 2021. Please check directly with the hotel for any changes and amenity availability prior to your stay.

Why we created this Blog?

As we travel a lot, we started noticing that glossy advertisements and staged travel photos are sometimes far from reality. Even, the high price tag does not guarantee you’ll get what you paid for...
